Event Overview
This two-day event will bring together welders of different skill levels to participate in a variety of welding challenges, including a team fabrication project and underwater welding training. The event is structured to promote teamwork, skill development, and hands-on experience across different welding disciplines. You do not need to be an underwater welder to participate in this event; all skill levels are welcome!

The IronWoman Welding Contest is an empowering and inclusive event designed to celebrate and uplift female welding students, teachers, and professionals alike. This unique gathering will feature an exciting welding contest where participants can showcase their skills, regardless of their experience level. In addition to the individual competition, attendees will have the chance to collaborate in a team build event, working together to create a striking piece that embodies the strength and creativity of women in welding.
A standout feature of the event is the underwater welding segment, where no prior experience is required, allowing participants to dive into this thrilling specialty with guidance from experts. To further enrich the experience, the contest will offer invaluable networking opportunities with some of the leading female welders in the country, fostering connections and mentorship that can inspire the next generation of women in the industry. With a focus on skill development, camaraderie, and empowerment, The IronWoman Welding Contest promises to be an unforgettable celebration of talent and community.
Event Schedule
Day 1 – May 16, 2025 San Jacinto College, 4801 Uvalde Rd, Houston, TX 77049
Morning Session:
* Introduction and Safety Briefing
* Skill Level Selection
Registered welders will choose one of the following welding skill levels:
1. Beginner: 2F GMAW and FCAW
2. Intermediate: 5F GTAW or SMAW
3. Advanced: 5G Combo GTAW/SMAW
Afternoon Session:
Team Fabrication Project: Participants will be grouped into teams, each tasked with completing a fabrication project. Teams will include a mix of skill levels, fostering mentorship and collaboration.
Day 2 – May 17, 2025 The Ocean Corporation, 10840 Rockley Rd, Houston, TX 77099
Morning Session:
* Underwater Welding Training
* Introduction to welding underwater in the 2F position
* Review of safety guidelines and techniques
* Hands-on underwater welding demonstration and practice
Important Reminders
Arrival Time: Arrive on May 16th by 8:00 AM for check-in and orientation.
Lunch and Breaks: Lunch will be provided on both days. Be sure to take breaks to stay refreshed and energized.
Hydration: Stay hydrated throughout the event, especially during outdoor welding activities.
Respect Safety Protocols: Safety is our top priority. Please follow all safety instructions and report any concerns to staff immediately.

Safety Requirements and PPE Guidelines
All participants must adhere to the San Jacinto College Welding PPE and Safe Attire Standards to ensure the safety of all individuals.
General PPE Requirements
Work Shirt: Long-sleeve cotton or Fire-Retardant Clothing (FRC). Shirts with snaps or buttons only.
Undershirt: All-cotton or FRC undershirts under the work shirt.
Pants: Long pants made of cotton (denim, twill, or FRC). No spandex, sweatpants, or ripped jeans allowed.
Footwear: Closed-toe, leather work boots (steel toe recommended but not required).
Gloves: Leather gloves, specific to the welding method being used (e.g., SMAW, GTAW, GMAW).
Welding Hood: Appropriate for the method (SMAW, GTAW, or GMAW/FCAW).
Hearing Protection: Required during all welding and grinding activities.
Welding Jacket: Full leather jacket or a cotton FRC jacket.
Welding Sleeves: Full leather or fire-resistant cotton sleeves, worn on both arms.
Welding PPE Specifics: SMAW (Stick Welding): Welding hood, gloves, hearing protection, and leather or FRC jacket and sleeves. GMAW/FCAW (MIG/Flux Core Welding): Welding hood, gloves, hearing protection, and leather or FRC jacket and sleeves. GTAW (TIG Welding): Welding hood, gloves, hearing protection, and leather or FRC jacket and sleeves. Underwater Welding PPE: Specialized underwater welding gear will be provided for the 2F position training. Participants must adhere to all underwater welding safety protocols. Participants should bring a long sleeve shirt and long pants, shoes or boots that can get wet to dive in (we have some wetsuits you can use but may not have your size. Additional Notes for Participants Team Fabrication Project: The fabrication activity is meant to foster teamwork and collaboration. Although welders will not be able to choose their group, all skill levels are welcome. More experienced welders are encouraged to assist beginners. PPE Responsibility: Each participant is responsible for ensuring that their PPE meets the above standards. Any personal PPE must be inspected and approved by event coordinators before the event.
